“Laugh, Clown, Laugh offers perhaps his most moving performance because, for much of it, we can’t shake the feeling that we’re watching Lon Chaney… as Lon Chaney.”(Nitrate Diva)
Lon Chaney gives a powerful performance without the use of his artistic makeup in this tender tale filmed in glowing perfection by Jame Wong Howe. Chaney plays Flik,a professional clown who rivals a rich, young count (Nils Asther) for the love of a circus dancer – played with an earthy purity by a teenage Loretta Young.
What could have become soap opera silliness becomes a film of dramatic and psychological genuineness due to Chaney’s skilled acting. He is the epitome of a clown laughing on the outside as he is dying on the inside. Although a lesser known of Chaney’s film, Laugh, Clown, Laugh is a must see for any Chaney or Silent Film fan.
