International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians  and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights promoting freedom of expression and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change. International Jazz Day will be celebrated here in the Hudson Valley at The Rosendale Theatre on Saturday, April 30th at 11 AM with a concert for families presented by the Hudson Valley Youth Orchestra (HVYZO) and Youth Arts @ The Rosendale Theatre.

The concert will feature a special guest artist, Tristen Napoli on trumpet.  Tristen is a professional trumpeter currently living in New York City and is an Kingston High School alumni, He has toured the US with the Artie Shaw Orchestra, performed at the Carnegie Club in NYC, and recorded a debut album with a quintet of jazz luminaries. Tristen was selected for the All American Jazz Orchestra and he  has performed at major jazz clubs in NYC including; Birdland, Smoke Jazz Club and Smalls Jazz Club.

The HVYJO will weave a musical tale telling the of the story of Jazz. From its birthplace in New Orleans to its adolescence in New York. From the swing feel of the great Duke Ellington and Count Basie to the Latin feel of Tito Puente. The concert will be co-directed by Dan Shaut and Bob Shaut and will feature clinicians and students of the Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra. “Jazz demands a performer to be a creator, a collaborator, a storyteller and an artist. At its best Jazz tells an American story – with swing in our toes, and blues in the heart, it tells the story of the American people; democratic, determined and innovative. HVYJO’s goal is to continue that story” shares Dan Shaut, Director of HVYJO.

The HVYJO will be returning to the Rosendale Theatre July 17- 21, 2017 to host a week-long summer jazz immersion program for students interested in performing and learning about jazz. Students will study with some of the top jazz musicians in the Hudson Valley and NYC area during rehearsals, master-classes, sectionals and performances. The week culminates with a performance featuring guest artist, Melissa Gardiner on Friday, July 21 at 5:15 pm at the Rosendale Theatre.
