Susan Slotnick, renowned choreographer, painter, humanitarian and columnist for the New Paltz Times will present a screening of The Game Changer: A Tale of Humanity behind the Forgotten Prison Walls (2014), a documentary film by Indrani Kopal. The film’s running time is 17 minutes with a solo dance performance and discussion to follow.
With this film Kopal hopes “to inspire others to explore dance, movement and self-expressive art forms as healing channels to empower and transform lives.” This moving and empathic film about the life altering effects dance can have on an individual follows Slotnick in her efforts to support the rehabilitation of prisoners through modern dance at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility. Game Changer was accepted at 18 film festivals, and winner of many prestigious awards including Best Short Documentary Award at the Harlem International Film Festival and first prize at the Cannes Film Festival at the American Pavilion.
Also in attendance will be Paul Kim who will perform a solo dance choreographed for him at Woodbourne Correctional Facility where he had been formerly incarcerated. Slotnick and Kim will be available for a discussion after the screening of the film.
This year Susan Slotnick received the prestigious Justice through the Arts and Journalism Award from the NYSACDL, New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Dance Film Sundays, a series which started in June 2010 under the auspices of the Rosendale Theater Collective, are held on the 2nd Sunday of every month at Rosendale Theater located at 408 Main Street Rosendale, New York 12472.
