Experience a cornucopia of flamenco and classic Spanish dance when Rosendale Theatre screens Antonio Gades’ Blood Wedding by the Gades Company, captured on HD at Teatro Real, Madrid. Additionally, flamenco artist Anna Mazo and dancers from The Vanaver Caravan SummerDance on Tour! will give the Rosendale Theatre’s new stage floor a good workout with live performances. The program will last approximately 75 minutes.
Created in In 1974, Antonio Gades pushed Spanish dance into new artistic territory with Blood Wedding, a powerful synthesis of flamenco, ballet, folk and contemporary dance tied together with a dramatic story. It is considered a classic. Based on the play by Federico García Lorca, the ballet’s dramaturg is Alfredo Mañas and the music was composed by Emilio de Diego and it features dancers Vanesa Vento and Joaquín Mulero. Gades said about the fight at the end between Leonardo and the Groom, which in a way sums up his attitude to creativity and performance in his art: “That fight is the most difficult thing I’ve done in my whole life. I expect a lot of myself, I expect everything. I want to synthesise that pain, dance like a man that is going to die and is meeting his death with austerity, without becoming frantic or making a spectacle.”
Anna Mazo is a classically trained performing artist who has performed internationally and has taught percussive dance, flamenco, modern, world dance and yoga throughout the United States, Spain, Italy and Japan. She was a featured soloist at the 2010 world premiere of The Vanaver Caravan’s Earthbeat! at Jacob’s Pillow’s Doris Duke Theatre. American by birth, Anna moved to Spain, her father’s homeland, to immerse herself in flamenco. She lived in Granada in order to study the art in its purest form. She studied with greats La Presy, Ivan Vargas and Fuensanta “La Moneta” and in Sevilla with Isabel Bayon, Manuel Betanzo and Andres Marin.
The Vanaver Caravan’s SummerDance on Tour!, now in its 25th year, is a unique 3-week dance intensive for dancers, ages 9 through teens. With distinguished faculty the SummerDance on Tour! exposes students to a wide variety of dance forms and styles that will expand their perceptions and vocabulary in the world of dance while piquing performance skills.
Dance Film Sundays, a series which started in June 2010 under the auspices of the Rosendale Theatre Collective, are held on the 2nd Sunday of every month at Rosendale Theatre.
