A band of misfits unites to courageously defeat an evil force and liberate their fellow citizens. A cruel leader is discovered to be nothing more than a weak little man hiding behind a curtain. These are the storylines behind the cinematic classic “The Wizard of Oz,” the 1939 film that still has lessons to teach America 78 years since its first release.

To celebrate Presidents Weekend, there will be a special free screening of “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday, February 18 at 3:00 PM at the Rosendale Theatre, 408 Main Street in Rosendale. For those unaware of this magical film, “The Wizard of Oz” opens when a tornado rips through 1930s Kansas, whisking away Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, to the magical land of Oz. The young girl only wants to get back home to Kansas, so townspeople in Munchkinland instruct Dorothy to visit the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan), who inhabits the Emerald City. As she journeys the Yellow Brick Road, the farm girl meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley), and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who become her friends and allies. But when they finally arrive in Emerald City, after run-ins with the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), the Wizard tells the quintet that they must perform a frightening task before he grants their wishes.
