Romeo and Juliet becomes Juliet and Romeo in master contemporary choreographer Mats Ek’s full-length work to Tchaikovsky’s music, performed by the Royal Swedish Ballet, captured at Stockholm’s Royal Opera House on HD. “It’s time to turn things around,” says Mats Ek, of his first major narrative work in almost two decades, captured live and only recently made available to audiences in the United States.  The running time is approximately 107 minutes.

A 4-star production according to “The Guardian,” Juliet and Romeo was created for the Royal Swedish Ballet in 2013.  Ek unwraps Shakespeare’s tale, showing how the young couple’s tragedy is born of, and inseparable from, the strife-riven society in which their lives unfold.  A master of reinterpreting the great classics into contemporary dance, Mats Ek says “All great stories through time must be taken care of so they remain significant in our time.”  That he chose to use Tschaikovsky’s score rather than Prokofiev’s more familiar score, signals Ek’s intention to depart from the status quo.  Starring Mariko Kida and Anthony Lomuljo as the lovers, the production features the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra conducted by Alexander Polianichko.  It was directed by Thomas Grimm.
