Cannoli: Traditions Around the Table is a film created by Fusion Box Films. No dessert is more identifiably Sicilian than Cannoli. It is arguably the dish that defines the Italian Pastry Shoppe or Pasticceria. “Cannoli, Traditions Around the Table” brings us from a sheep dairy farm to Nonna’s kitchen while exploring the role of cannoli in our daily lives and traditions. Winner of Best Documentary at the New York Women in Film and Televisions Film Festival, “Cannoli, Traditions Around the Table” explores the impact food traditions have on family through the story of cannoli and its role in the Italian American household. The film was created by siblings Francesco and Andrea Cordaro. They also have a strong connection to the pasticceria. Their father, Frank Cordaro, is the pastry chef and owner at La Deliziosa Pastry Shoppe in Poughkeepsie, NY. The film runs 20 minutes. Francesco and Andrea will introduce the film and take questions after it.
Umberto E. is a heart-warming, epic story created by Anton Evangelista, the award-winning Director/filmmaker’s father, Umberto Evangelista. Umberto is a dynamic and charming ninety-year-old Italian immigrant whose real-life Cinderella tale leads us along his path of personal triumphs over childhood abandonment, harsh treatment in orphanages, and a rejecting stepmother. Yet, in spite of all his adversities, Umberto chose love and forgiveness as his weapons of “revenge,” which led to finding the love of his life – his future wife, Luisa, and the new life they would have with their children in coming to America. The film is 45 minutes in length and is narrated by Anton. With some English subtitles when Umberto is speaking. Anton will introduce the film and take questions after it.
Each ticket buyer will be given a small cannoli from La Deliziosa Bakery in Poughkeepsie and a cup of coffee. Large cannolis and espresso will be available for purchase. There will also be a 50/50 raffle raising funds for the Reher Center.
